A personal note
My experience
On the drive back from a road trip to Amanohashidate, I made a detour to Kayabuki no Sato before heading back into the city.
Tucked away in the remote mountains of Miyama, this secluded village feels like stepping straight back into Edo-period Japan. Generations of local families built these iconic farmhouses using native timber and pampas grass thatch. While much of rural Japan modernized over the 20th century, Miyama’s residents actively fought to preserve their ancestral homes and traditional way of life. Today, it stands as a designated National Important Preservation District and a living museum.
It’s a wonderfully picturesque spot to take in a piece of living history. If you plan to visit, I’d strongly recommend renting a car to make the journey easier.
Catching the village during sakura season made the stop even more special, the soft pink blossoms set against the rustic thatched roofs made for incredible photos!
If you do happen to have a car and have the extra time in Kyoto to make the trip, I'd highly recommend you go and check it out!
