Kayabuki no Sato is a picturesque, historic village in Miyama, Kyoto, renowned for having one of Japan's highest concentrations of traditional thatched-roof farmhouses preserved amidst one of Japan's most beautiful scenic mountain landscapes.

SENNAN LONG PARK

Tucked away in the Kansai region, Sennan Long Park is a local sanctuary perfect for unwinding as the sun dips below the horizon. Beyond its stunning sunset views, the park frequently hosts vibrant community events and art exhibitions, making it a dynamic spot to experience local life.

AMANOHASHIDATE

Known as the "Bridge to Heaven," Amanohashidate features a breathtaking three kilometer sandbar lined with thousands of pine trees sweeping across Miyazu Bay. To capture its full magic, head to the mountaintop park and try the traditional matanozoki, peering upside down through your legs to see the sandbar float like a dragon suspended in the sky. While it takes a quick journey from central Kyoto, the tranquil atmosphere and iconic scenery make it an unmissable coastal escape.

PHILOSOPHER'S PATH

One of my favourite short and relaxing walks in Japan. It’s a rare place where Japan’s deep historical soul and its vibrant natural seasons coexist, allowing you to reset and escape away from the crowds in Kyoto.

YAMAZAKI DISTILLERY

Even as a novice, a tour of Suntory's Yamazaki Distillery offered the perfect introduction to one of Japan's most underappreciated treasures: its whisky. With free admission and a wide selection of affordable whiskys to sample, it’s an ideal place to explore the art of Japanese whisky-making.

KADOYA KAKIGŌRI

Kakigōri, Japanese shaved ice, is Japan's elegant answer to the summer heat. While you may find it all over Japan, none compare to the mastery of Kadoya, a hidden gem in Osaka that serves what I believe is the finest Kakigōri in all of Japan.

AOI CAPE

Fukui & Shiga

Tucked away in the coastal town of Obama, Aoi Cape remains a cherished secret among locals. My own discovery of this enchanting spot was made possible by the guidance of a resident of the town. It's the perfect venue to relax and observe the sun's descent as it dips into the ocean.

KORAKUEN GARDEN

Okayama

Best known as one of Japan's three great gardens, Korakuen is a garden like nothing you've ever seen before. With construction of the garden started as far back as 1687, the beautiful landscape and design are a breathtaking view in person.

ISHIHARA FARM

Okayama

Ishihara Farm, perched atop a mountain in Okayama, is a renowned local farm celebrated for its exquisite fruits. This destination attracts visitors from all parts of Japan, as it's a great place to learn about the intricate process of harvesting Okayama's prized fruits, which are considered some of the most expensive in Japan. It's most famous for its grapes, especially the Shine Muscat which is one of the most expensive and delicious fruits in the region.

MOUNT WAKAKUSA

Nara

Wakakusa offers the finest vantage point in Nara for observing deer. This stunning park, enhanced by breathtaking views of the city, is the perfect spot to appreciate Japan's natural beauty.

EXPO MEMORIAL PARK

Once home to the 1970 World Exposition, Expo '70 Commemorative Park in Suita has evolved into a lush cultural haven featuring expansive gardens, museums, and Taro Okamoto’s famous Tower of the Sun. It stands as a premier destination for both nature lovers seeking seasonal blossoms and history enthusiasts eager to explore Japan's modern heritage.

OHAMA BEACH

Experience the beautiful Japanese nature and beach at Ohama. Located on the coastal line of Awaji Island, it's far away from the busy city of Kobe and Osaka, making it a great getaway place for families and tourists who want a change of setting from the usual city life.

BYODO-IN TEMPLE

A historic symbol as featured on the Japanese 10 yen coin, Byodo-in is one of Japan's most famous and treasured temples. With over 1,000 years of history, it stands as a testament to the country’s rich cultural heritage.

FUKUCHIYAMA RAILWAY TRAIL

Discontinued in 1986, the Fukuchiyama Railway Trail still shows remnants of its vibrant past. Once a bustling railway line, it has transformed into a long, scenic trail featuring beautiful views and walkable train tunnels that can span almost up to 1 km! It's truly a hidden gem for nature lovers, but hike at your own risk!

UMEDA SKY BUILDING

Famous for its unique twin-tower design, the Umeda Sky Building features an unforgettable 360-degree open-air observatory. Offering unmatched, panoramic views of Osaka, this architectural marvel is a true castle in the sky.

MOUNT IKOMA OBSERVATORY

Mount Ikoma Observatory, also known as Bokurano Hiroba, is a hidden secret, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Osaka cityscape. Apart from the scenic hike that is popular amongst locals, visitors can immerse themselves in Japanese culture at the nearby Hozanji Temple, a historic spiritual site nestled in the mountains.

MINOH FALLS

Minoh Falls is a scenic and accessible hike located just north of Osaka’s city center. Though short, the trail offers a beautiful journey through Japan’s lush naturescape. It’s especially popular in autumn, when the path is lined with vibrant maple leaves, creating a breathtaking seasonal display. Needless to say, it's also home to one of Osaka's most famous and tallest waterfall.

Men Leads Nakano is a popular ramen specialty shop tucked away in Tenri, Nara. A favorite among Tenri University students and local residents, it’s the perfect spot for those seeking authentic Japanese ramen in a cozy setting. It's my favourite Ramen that I've ever had, by far.

Lugang Old Street is a popular traditional market frequented primarily by Taiwanese locals. The street is lined with well-preserved old-fashioned shophouses and crowded food stalls, with all kinds of classic Taiwanese cuisine. It's the perfect destination for anyone looking for an authentic glimpse into the local culture and daily life of a person living in Taiwan.

In a land where Daoism and Buddhism temples are many, Luce Chapel is a rare and odd find. A modern church located in the middle of a university campus, it boasts a unique architecture, one that I'd say is worth taking the trip for. Complemented by interesting side attractions scattered around the university campus, Luce Chapel is a great place to visit and spend half your day during a trip to Taichung.

DaKeng is a beloved hiking spot in Taichung by the locals. It's a perfect spot for those who want to experience Taiwan's nature, culture, and community. The trail winds uphill through greenery, with local vendors selling everything from fresh produce to hot street food. An easy climb that leads to scenic views, it's high on my list for recommendations to experience Taiwan's local life.

Accessible from Xindian, the last subway stop on the green line, Bitan Scenic Area, serves as a popular getaway for locals seeking nature and tranquility. Just a short distance from the city, Bitan Scenic Area is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, including lush mountains and the serene Bitan River.

WANGYOU VALLEY

Wangyougu (望幽谷) is a breathtaking coastal valley nestled along Taiwan’s scenic northeast coast near Keelung. Famous for its lush green cliffs, ocean views, and serene hiking trail, it’s a hidden gem perfect for nature lovers and photographers.

FUDA DUMPLING

Opened in 1991, Fuda has been a beloved local destination for dumplings. Offering delicious, authentic flavors at very affordable prices, Fuda is the go to place for dumplings if you are around the Taipei area.

LAU THOI KHA

Nestled in a quiet pocket of Kaohsiung, Lau Thoi Kha is a true hidden gem. You’d easily miss it if not for the lively crowd of university students spilling out the door. Drawn in by the buzz, I gave it a shot, and was rewarded with a meal truly unlike anything I’d experienced before.

MAOKONG

As one of Taipei’s most versatile spots, Maokong easily makes my top recommendations list. It offers multiple ways to reach the summit and a wide array of activities for all ages. While most visitors come to relax over local tea or enjoy tea-infused ice cream, one of my personal favorite things to do here is hit the trails and go hiking.

XPARK AQUARIUM

Xpark is a state-of-the-art aquarium located in Taiwan, dedicated to marine education and conservation. It showcases a diverse array of aquatic life, featuring both local and exotic species not found elsewhere. Developed by the renowned Japanese company Kansai Electric Power Co., Xpark incorporates Japanese architectural inspirations, enriching its stunning exhibitions and creating never-before-seen experiences for its visitors.

Heping Island, located off the coast of Keelung in Taiwan, is a beautiful destination celebrated for its stunning natural landscapes and rich history. Featuring numerous remnants of historical military installations, and paved paths to its picturesque beaches and scenic viewpoints, it’s an ideal spot for anyone looking to explore both history and nature in one captivating location.

MIAOKOU NIGHT MARKET

Despite being one of the largest night markets in northern Taiwan, Miaokou often gets overlooked as travelers flock to nearby attractions like Shifen and Jiufen. However, it’s a hidden gem that shouldn’t be missed! With its diverse array of food options and vibrant atmosphere, Miaokou is a must-visit for anyone eager to immerse themselves in authentic night market culture!

RICE BALL KING

One of my favorite breakfast spots in Taiwan! True to its name, this place is renowned for its Taiwanese-style onigiri. While similar to Japanese onigiri, Taiwanese onigiri uses sticky rice wrapped in a crispy fried dough stick, offering a delightful twist. With a variety of delicious fillings available, you can choose from sweet, spicy, or traditional fillings, making each rice ball a unique and flavorful breakfast!

Unlike the flashy hotel bars or the luxury restaurants in Hong Kong, Date Cafe (同芯冰室) is one of the go to places for locals trying to get a taste at one of Hong Kong's most traditional type of restaurants. the cha chaan teng. With great portions and an affordable price, it's easily one of my top favourites in Hong Kong.

Dim Sum has long been one of Hong Kong’s most beloved and delicious dish. Traditionally, it’s a dish meant to be savored slowly, enjoyed while seated among company. But as the world grows increasingly fast-paced, Tong Kee Bao Dim is making delicious Dim Sum more accessible for the everyday person like me, on the go.

Lau Hing Kee is a cherished local restaurant famed for its masterful Pan Fried buns. A humble yet legendary spot, it has built its reputation over decades and I can testify that it's been one of my favourite spots ever since coming to Hong Kong.

Edward Youde Aviary, situated near the Central business center, provides an immediate retreat from bustling city life. It’s a great place for visitors to relax and reconnect with one of nature’s most amazing creatures; birds.

BRAEMAR HILL

The Braemar Hill Lookout is a short hike on the mountain range of Hong Kong Island. Known for it's easy difficulty and exceptional views, its a favourite amongst locals and my go-to recommendation for anyone who wants to get a glimpse of what Hong Kong looks like from up top.

One of the newest hotspots in Hong Kong, West Kowloon has become a focal point for development by the Hong Kong government, hoping to transform the area into the hub for art and history in Hong Kong. Whether you're there to explore contemporary art at the M+ Museum, delve into history at the Hong Kong Museum, or simply enjoy a stunning sunset, West Kowloon has plenty to offer and shouldn't be missed!
