Da Keng has long been a favorite hiking spot among Taichung locals, having a unique blend of outdoor activity with local charm. More than just a trail, it’s a vibrant community experience where nature meets culture, thanks to the bustling street markets woven all along the path. My hiking hobby began during my time in Hong Kong, so on a visit to Taichung, I was eager to explore what Taiwan has to offer. My local friends, although not hikers themselves, generously offered to guide me through Da Keng. We set off early, and I was lucky enough to get a driven directly to the trailhead, though I noted that there were public buses available for future solo trips. Even at that morning hour, the atmosphere was surprisingly lively. We opted for the 9-1 trail, which was recommended as the perfect introductory route. The hike begins not with wilderness, but with a lengthy market. The air was immediately rich with many aromas, sizzling meats, sweet pastries, and earthy scents from fresh local harvests. Vendors ranged from farmers displaying their just-picked vegetables to artisans selling homemade specialties. Wisely, I decided to postpone my tasting tour until the descent, not wanting a full stomach on the climb ahead. The true start of the trail is a formidable yet challenging staircase, a winding ascent of roughly 600 steps that threads through lush greenery. The climb is a gentle workout, rewarded at the top with a stunning panoramic viewpoint. There, we paused to catch our breath and admire the serene, beautiful view of Da Keng town below. The journey down was a delightful adventure, and the best part of the hike as it involved food. As we descended, we were welcomed with many food stalls, each offering a chance to sample authentic Taiwanese street food. Unlike the ascent I indulged fully: savoring fluffy, steaming buns straight from the bamboo basket, crispy oven-baked buns with savory fillings, and my absolute favorite, the flavorful classic fish ball soup, a true taste of local comfort. The downhill walk took a leisurely 30 minutes, bringing our total hike to a manageable hour and a half. Da Keng’s 9-1 trail is more than just a walk in the woods; it’s an accessible immersion into the Taiwanese life. I wholeheartedly recommend it to any visitor seeking not only natural beauty but also an authentic and delicious taste of local culture.
