Nestled in a quiet pocket of Kaohsiung, Lau Thoi Kha is a true hidden gem. You’d easily miss it if not for the lively crowd of university students spilling out the door. Drawn in by the buzz, I gave it a shot, and was rewarded with a meal truly unlike anything I’d experienced before.

- It’s not your typical Taiwanese eatery, and due to the ingredients used prices are on the higher side. However the creativity of the food in my opinion justifies the higher than average cost.
- Accessibility
- Quite accessible through the Kaohsiung MTR. Take the subway to Sizihwan Station, and walk a short 4-minutes to the restaurant.
- Uniqueness
- Lau Thoi Kha specializes in Taiwanese fusion, and as a result there’s many dishes which you can’t find anywhere else!
A personal note
My experience
After catching a beautiful sunset at Sizihwan, I was looking for dinner spots and a local friend who studied at the nearby university recommended Lau Thoi Kha as a hot dinner spot amongst the students.
True to its Chinese name, the restaurant is tucked at the bottom of a staircase. The interior is cozy, quirky, and full of character, definitely not your average dining spot.
The food of course was the highlight of the restaurant. There’s a variety of fusion dishes you can choose from, and the menu is full of creative surprises. I tried various pastas, which were all delicious, but if I had to recommend one dish it was the Thin Crust Pizza with Pork & Mochi. Very interesting combination, that doesn’t sound very delicious by ear, but the different flavours and textures result in a flavorful surprise! The portions are on the smaller side, so if you’re a big eater, keep that in mind!
Overall, if you're interested in fusion foods, or would like a soft introduction to food in Taiwan, Lau Thoi Kha would be my go to spot.
