About

Minoh Falls is a scenic and accessible hike located just north of Osaka’s city center. Though short, the trail offers a beautiful journey through Japan’s lush naturescape. It’s especially popular in autumn, when the path is lined with vibrant maple leaves, creating a breathtaking seasonal display. Needless to be said, it's also home to one of Osaka's most famous and tallest waterfalls.

Uniqueness

What sets Minoh Falls apart is the blend of nature, culture, and convenience. The trail features more than just a scenic route; you can experience traditional Japanese architecture nestled along the path, and also learn about the history of temples of Japan as Ryuanji Temple is just nearby.

My Experience

I’ve never been a huge fan of using time during trips for hiking, but the experience I had in Minoh changed that for me. Minoh is quite famous for it's maple trees, and I quickly realised that the maple trees here are unlike those in Canada. The leaves are smaller, more delicate, and almost perfectly shaped. I found out about Minoh Falls as a friend from Osaka University recommended it as a convenient way to enjoy nature without venturing too far away from the city. I was tight on time, so it was perfect for my schedule. I was lucky to visit in spring, just as the plants were beginning to bloom. What surprised me the most was how well preserved and peaceful the trail was. It’s frequented by locals & tourists but yet still feels like a hidden gem to me. The real highlight, in my opinion, isn’t just the waterfall, but the journey to on the way to the falls. The trail is infused with bits of culture and history, as there's a well known temple nearby. Beautiful architected houses are scattered throughout the hike, making it a great sight! Do note that there's three popular routes that can be taken 1) The Simple Route: Start at Minoh Station, walk to the falls, and return the same way. 2) Scenic Challenge: For a more adventurous route, take the same path to the falls, but on your way back, detour up the mountain stairs. You’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of Osaka—absolutely worth the extra effort! 3) Daruma Path to Katsuoji Temple: Although i've never done it myself, you can walk all the way to Katsuoji Temple, which is famous for it's Daruma Dolls! Overall, I would say the scenic challenge that I took was very rewarding. Despite its difficulty, it’s definitely worth it, and the view at the top is incredible!
